The 1st Annual Lithia Annual Prairie Moon Vineyards Chess Tournament was held on Saturday, March 08, 2008 at the Gilbert Lutheran Church. It was attended by over 35 Ames and Gilbert School students and their families. Every participant was awarded a trophy or medal and/or a certificate.
Mr. Tim McEntee, President, Iowa Chess Federation, Mrs. Holly Nissen, Co-owner of Prairie Moon Vineyards and Mr. Randy Sniezek, Teacher, Gilbert Elementary School were invited guests that assisted in the award ceremony. Ian Scott Beachler was awarded a plaque for his outstanding academic and chess accomplishments. Ian was crowned the Iowa High School Chess Champion in 2006 when he was a senior at Gilbert High School. Ian attended Gilbert Schools throughout his K-12 career and is currently a freshman in the Department of Mathematics at Iowa State.
The Chess Tournament was sponsored by Prairie Moon Vineyards and jointly hosted by the Gilbert Academy, 4-H and Iowa Chess Center. Vellareddy Anantharam, Pete Karagianis, Jean Saveraid, and Mullai Sritharan were the organizers of the contest.

K-8: 1st place champion: Jay Amin; 2nd place champion, Kushan Tyagi; 3rd place champion, Steven Dong.
Grades K-3: 1st Place, Evan Welk; 2nd Place, Joshua Zhao; 3rd Place, Ryan Mills; 4th Place, Ananya Mitra.
Grades 4-8: 1st Place, Richard Dong; 2nd Place, Ujjal Bhattacharya and Sachin Deepak; 3rd Place, Tilden Chen; 4th Place, Cannon Heubner.
